Saturday 21 March 2015 - Dawn blessing and unveiling … moving and spectacular. Photos by Roger Beckett.
If you did not rise early on Saturday and share in the dawn blessing of our community artwork you missed a memorable event. More than 100 people did arrive in the pre-dawn gloom to be led across the bridge as it was unveiled by Ngati Toa Kaumatua Kahu Ropata.
A breakfast followed in St Andrews parish hall with splendid kai from The Big Salami with home baking. Speakers from Hongoeka shared some of the rich history behind the names on the bridge balustrade artwork. Landscape architect Linda Kerkmeester talked about the design and construction of the balustrade. PRA representative Carolyn Williams expressed thanks to everyone involved and remarked that the balustrade is an artwork and a history lesson. Working with people from Hongoeka was a great experience and ideas were on the boil for further cooperative projects.
Taupo is the Ngati Toa name for this area which explains its prominent position on our new naming wave.
